5th Global Youth Employment Summit (YES 2010)
Planning meeting
March 9-10 2009,
New Delhi, India
On March 9 and 10, 2009, a planning meeting was held for the Rework the World meeting in India to be held in October 2009. The purpose was to meet with the YES leaders and an engaged group of diverse stakeholders to figure out a way to accelerate the process of employment creation.
This two-day meeting gathered around 30 high-level participants from government, business, civil society, youth groups and practitioners in India.
In the group, there was general agreement that it was time to innovate with ‘what has worked’ and find ways to replicate effective practices. And about 40 successful initiatives were identified for possible replication by YES Network leaders in India, under the following broad themes:
· Overcoming the problem of waste
(including initiatives such as Using Industrial waste for producing raw materials, Cotton waste management, Construction of public toilets, Producing power from Poultry waste)
· Promoting youth-led enterprises
(including initiatives such as Micro-credits to entrepreneurs, Innovations in education, skills building and income generation, Organic farming and marketing of farm produce)
· Sustainable agriculture and forestry
(including initiatives such as IT in agriculture, Agriculture extension services, Green livelihood initiatives)
In preparation for the October meeting the 8 YES State level Networks will work with their members and the participants of this meeting to identify one or two initiatives (of the total 40) that they would like to replicate in their States and work together to design the projects, create partnerships and raise seed funding locally to participate in the Action Workshops at the October meeting.
