The Swedish Postcode Lottery

PKL.jpg

The business idea of the Swedish Postcode Lottery is to generate money for charity. To achieve this, we make use of market forces – a business model that we call Market-Driven Charity.

The Postcode Lottery has given people, who perhaps would not otherwise donate money to charity, a simple and entertaining way to do so. Through our concept people are given the chance to win money together with their neighbours, while at the same time helping to build a better world.

Through active marketing, prime time TV entertainment in the form of the PostkodMiljonären (the Postcode Millionaire) programme, as well as large lottery prizes, we attract subscribers to the Lottery.

A BUSINESS MODEL THAT WORKS

The more lottery tickets we sell, the more money we can donate to the charitable organisations that are our beneficiaries. An added bonus is the powerful media exposure we give these organisations, which strengthens their brands and raises awareness about the important work they do. The large sums the Lottery hands out to the organisations each year provide clear evidence that the business model works.

Several well-known personalities with a commitment to issues such as human rights, climate issues, and research, such as Jan Eliasson, Nelson Mandela, Tony Blair, Bill Clinton and Amelia Adamo support the idea behind the Postcode Lottery.
